MaineStream Internet Brings
Fiber-Optic Service to Charleston

For Immediate Release --

CHARLESTON, MAINE (March 29, 2016)--Local internet service provider MaineStream Internet has built fiber-optic cable to bring “state of the art” internet service to the southern portion of Charleston, and customers are being added to the new service daily, the company announced today.

When we say state-of-the-art, we mean it,” said Andy Hinkley, MaineStream’s president. “We are offering faster speeds and increased reliability that no one else is offering in Charleston -- not the phone company, any of the satellite companies, or any other service provider. Very few towns in Maine have speeds like these customers can have.”

MaineStream has built six miles of fiber-optic cable along Charleston roads and provided advanced electronics to make the high-speed “fiber-to-the-home” service possible. MaineStream provides the same fiber-based service in parts of Hudson and Lincoln, and offers traditional DSL service in Dover-Foxcroft, Dexter, and a number of other area towns.

Customers have a choice of speeds ranging from 10 Mbps (megabits per second) to 50 Mbps, all at affordable prices. Two business customers have elected 100 Mbps service to meet their more intensive business needs. Fiber-based phone service is also offered.

MaineStream’s new fiber cable connects to the rest of the company’s network through the Maine Fiber Company’s statewide Three Ring Binder cable, providing customers with an all-fiber connection to the internet “cloud” and all its services.

We’re pleased to have received partial funding from the ConnectME Authority for this project,” Hinkley said. “Access to the very high internet speeds of fiber-to-the-home service has been shown to increase property values, and it improves access to education and healthcare in our rural area. It’s a worthwhile project, and it would not have been possible without the ConnectME Authority’s help.”

Fiber-to-the-home service is a future-proof solution for broadband for businesses and residences,” said Jeff McCarthy, vice president of Maine Fiber Company. “This kind of connectivity puts these homes on the top rung – not just in Maine, but nationally. It’s wicked good internet! This is exactly the type of partnership that our statewide Three Ring Binder cables were built to support.”
